Richard Dadd, the Fairy Feller & the Mischievous Sprite

Wednesday 12 July 2023. 1pm.
Free. Booking is not required.

A Talk by Dr Amanda Draper – Curator of Art & Exhibitions at  Victoria Gallery & Museum.

Of all the eccentric Victorian fairy painters, Richard Dadd is the most notorious, with a life blighted by murder, insanity and incarceration. To mark The Atkinson’s display of Dadd’s painting Puck we explore the life and work of this troubled artist, and the story behind the mischievous sprite who causes havoc in Shakespeare’s  A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Puck is on loan from the Harris Museum, Art Gallery & Library in Preston.

Dr Amanda Draper is a specialist in Victorian visual culture and led on the acquisition of Puck for the Harris in 2011 during her role there as Keeper of Fine Art. She is currently Curator of Art & Exhibitions for the Victoria Gallery & Museum in Liverpool.

This event takes place in the galleries and has limited capacity. First come first served.

Join us in Southport Library at The Atkinson for an evening with local author, Elizabeth Morton.

Wednesday 12 July 2023. 6:30pm – 7:30pm

Author Elizabeth Morton, and ex Christ The King pupil, writes sagas set in Liverpool and Southport.

Come and hear Elizabeth talk about her new book, The Orphans of Liverpool Lane, published by Pan Macmillan. Hear how she gets her ideas from experiences growing up in the Northwest.

Afterwards she will be happy to sign copies of her books and have an informal chat.
