The Atkinson is Southport’s home for music, theatre, art, literature, and history. There’s so much to do all under one roof, and for free too!

Free Craft Workshops

Head to The Atkinson’s Art Box for an arts and crafts workshop suitable for all the family. Find your favourite animal on display in The Atkinson and create an artwork imagining its journey to a natural habitat. There’s something for all ages, with all materials supplied and all for free!

Drop-in any time between 11am – 3pm and get creative:

Children under 12 must be supervised by an adult. First come first served. You may be expected to wait until a space at a craft table becomes available.


Museum – Discover Ancient Egypt

The stunning Egyptology museum showcases Anne Goodison’s personal artefacts in an interactive display. Mrs Goodison was one of a handful of wealthy Victorian ladies in the North West who were fascinated by ancient Egypt, and The Atkinson is lucky to have her collection to show you.

Museum – Between Land & Sea

The local history museum tells the story of Sefton from prehistoric times to the present day. Bring objects to life by scanning QR codes with your phone, send a digital postcard from Sunny Southport and take a selfie in a historic costume from the dressing up wall.

Southport Library

Southport Library’s showpiece is the extended children’s section, which includes a reading ship, specially made for the library. Story & Rhyme Time sessions take place once a week on a Wednesday at 11:30am. The perfect free event for families with little ones that are pre-school age. Places are limited. Pre-booking is required on on a first come, first served basis. To book please visit Southport Library in person or call 0151 934 2118.

Exhibition – The Sefton Open 2023

The Sefton Open is an annual exhibition celebrating the creativity and artistic talent across the borough. Discover an impressive variety of work including paintings, sculpture, photography and more. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to vote for their favourite artwork on display. The artwork with the most votes will be awarded The People’s Prize.

Free Entry. 1 April – 13 May 2023. Monday – Saturday. 10am – 4pm.

Café, Shop & Accessibility

Award winning café, A Great Little Place, offer the finest locally-roasted artisan coffee and imaginative food created in their own kitchens. Check the seasonal menu for excellent special offers and family friendly choices.

In the shop you can also pick up Southport memorabilia that any Sandgrounder would be proud to own! Remember your visit to The Atkinson with souvenirs from our museum and exhibitions programme.

The building itself is fully accessible, with lifts to access all areas. The Atkinson has toilets on all floors, baby changing facilities on the ground floor as well as full adult Changing Places facility on the first floor. We hope you enjoy discovering all The Atkinson has to offer.
