People are being asked to stay safe with strong winds and coastal gales forecast later.

The National Trust says it is closing its car parks this afternoon due to the weather.

People on foot are also being urged not to enter due to the possibility of trees or branches falling.

A National Trust spokesperson said: “Due to the high wind forecast this evening, we’ll be fully closing our car parks at 3pm today, including the woodland car park at Victoria Road.

“We advise all pedestrians not to enter the site as there is a high chance of branches or trees falling.

“We hope to reopen our car parks at 9am tomorrow, however if the wind gusts are very strong, this may be delayed while we carry out a post-storm check for any damage.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

Today’s Met Office forecast is for this morning’s heavy rain to be followed by sunny spells and scattered showers from the west in the afternoon.

This will be followed by strong winds with gales, especially on the coast, possibly severe towards the end of the day.
