Blackhurst Butchers say they are delighted to move into their new home right at the front of Southport Market.

The family-run firm has been operating in the market, on the corner of Market Street and King Street in Southport town centre, for the past 45 years.

Southport Market is currently undergoing a stunning £1.4million transformation by Sefton Council into a brand new food, drink and events hub, with some exciting announcements due over the coming weeks.

Blackhurst Butchers remains trading throughout the building work currently taking place.

This includes at the market itself, as an ‘essential business’, but also through home delivery services with customers able to order via the Blackhurst’s website and app.

Owner Tony Blackhurst said: “We love our new home at the front of Southport, it’s really nice here.

“It is great to be able to see daylight every day after 20 years being deep inside the market!

“Since we have moved to our brand new unit at the front, we have seen lots of people walking past, waving and saying hello, and we have enjoyed seeing them.

“Some people have walked past and have said they didn’t realise that there was a butcher’s here. It’s definitely going to help us with promoting our presence in the town centre.

“Blackhurst Butchers was situated at the front of Southport Market many years ago, so it’s nice to be back.”

Building work is currently taking place at the site with further food and drink operators looking forward to moving in.

The transformation started on 2 November and is expected to be completed this Spring.

It has been made possible thanks to £900,000 Government funding through a Southport Town Deal acceleration grant, and £500,000 through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

Blackhurst Butchers is keeping its doors open with its current trading hours both through the building work and through the national Covid lockdown, as it is classed as an “essential business.”

The business prides itself on sourcing the very best British produce, from Cumbrian beef, to Welsh lamb and English pork.

Blackhurst Butchers launched a brand new App last year while customers can also order via phone or through their website, with a home delivery service meaning people can be served from the safety of their own homes.

The business also operates its own ‘click and collect’ service, meaning that people who order through the App or the website can turn up to the Market and wait outside while staff bring their food to the car window – perfect when it’s raining, or for people who want to remain Covid safe.

Tony Blackhurst said: “The builders are not wasting any time – they have been very busy making all the changes.

“I am looking forward to seeing who will be coming in to join us in here.

“The plans to redevelop Southport Market look really good. I am very excited by it all.

“Hopefully by the summer things will be getting back to normal with all the Covid vaccinations taking place at the moment.”

When building work finishes and the new Southport Market opens, it will herald a new ‘Market Quarter’ and help to attract other new businesses to the area.

Tony Blackhurst said: “The shops and other businesses in the area must be made up for this work to take place. It will be nice for those businesses when Southport Market opens, it should help to make the area very busy.

“I am looking forward to seeing the national Covid lockdown restrictions easing and seeing new customers coming in to see us.

“It will be great to see lots of people walking around town again!”

Over the last five decades owner Tony Blackhurst and his family have enjoyed welcoming a regular stream of loyal customers calling in for their top quality local British produce, award winning sausages, legendary steaks and home prepared meals.

People with a taste for the more exotic can also order items including: English Spatchcock Chickens (Greek Style or Piri Piri), Handmade Spring Lamb Koftas, Chinese Pork Steaks, Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Stuffed Chicken Breast with a French Sauce, Caribbean Chicken and Spring Welsh Mini Lamb Kleftico.

When the Coronavirus pandemic struck in March Blackhurst Butchers quickly launched a home delivery service, ensuring they delivered to customers within a six-mile radius including Southport, Banks, Formby, Scarisbrick and Halsall. The phones never stopped ringing.

Now they have launched their brand new App to make life even easier for shoppers.

The £1.4 million redesign and refurbishment of Southport Market which is being led by Sefton Council will create a modern food and drinks space, along with a flexible events and market area with the ability to host casual markets.

The new look market will be an all year-round attraction with space for up to ten delicious food and drinks units.

Acting as a catalyst for the regeneration of Southport and surrounding area, and providing a vital boost to the local economy and continued regeneration of Southport’s market quarter and King Street, the market will also include units for fresh produce stalls.

  10. My husband and i were so relieved that Edward managed to complete his preliminary research while using the precious recommendations he got in your site. It’s not at all simplistic to simply happen to be handing out facts which some others may have been selling. And we also realize we now have the writer to thank for that. Those explanations you have made, the simple site navigation, the relationships you give support to foster – it is all amazing, and it is leading our son and our family consider that that topic is fun, and that’s especially serious. Many thanks for the whole lot!

You actually make it appear really easy along with your presentation however I find this matter to be actually something that I think I’d never understand. It sort of feels too complicated and very wide for me. I’m having a look forward for your next put up, I¦ll try to get the hold of it!
