Volunteers are busy getting 3,000 books ‘shelf ready for when Birkdale Community Hub and Library can open its doors.
The old Station Master’s House at Birkdale Train Station has enjoyed a complete transformation over the past few months, and is waiting to find out about the latest Government Covid restrictions before it can open to the public.
The aim is to turn a disused but central Birkdale property into a well used and valued community asset with clean modern facilities, following the closure of Birkdale Library as part of council Budget cuts a decade ago.
New mains water and electricity have now been connected to the house and the team of volunteer librarians are busy, sorting and cataloguing thousands of books.
A spokesperson said: “This is a major undertaking which they are doing from home during the lockdown.
“The next stage will be getting the approximately 3,000 books ‘shelf ready’ which includes sticking labels inside and on the spine, and putting the books into plastic jackets.
“The first book going out on loan will be an exciting moment for everyone and despite restrictions relating to the Coronavirus pandemic, this will be made as easy and convenient as possible.
“As with most libraries, the first step will be to join.
“We will let you know when you are able to do so and how to go about it, ready for the opening date.
“Once you are a member you will be able to borrow books. It is likely that social distancing rules will mean that, at least initially, we won’t be able to offer the option to browse, however there will be an online catalogue, accessed via the website, from which to request books. These will be reserved for you and a pick up time arranged. For those unable to access the internet, there will be limited access to the library to borrow books.
“The library has a children’s area where reading with children and story times can be held. It is hoped that until these groups can meet, volunteers will be able to offer this remotely in some form.
“Opening hours are yet to be confirmed but there has been a great response to the call for volunteers so we aim to make them as flexible and convenient as possible.”
