The King has appointed Peter Oliver OBE as His Majesty’s Lord‑Lieutenant of Merseyside. Peter, from Southport, took up the role yesterday, as Mark Blundell CVO retired after 8 years of dedicated and impactful service.
Peter will serve in this voluntary role as The King’s representative in the county, supported by a broad Merseyside Lieutenancy team. Duties include supporting the organisation of Royal visits, increasing recognition through Honours and King’s Awards, encouraging cohesion, engaging in the civic, community, enterprise, and social life of the county, encouraging volunteering, liaising with the local military and supporting the judiciary and the magistracy.
The work of the Lieutenancy is guided by themes important to The King, including developing community cohesion, celebrating culture in all its diversity, protecting our climate and natural environment, and cherishing our place in the Commonwealth grounded in equality and shared values.
The team is also guided by themes important to wider members of the Royal Family, including supporting young people and vulnerable adults, building strong foundations during early childhood, supporting emergency responders, and changing the conversation on mental health.
Peter said: “It is a great honour if slightly daunting to take on this role. Merseyside has a remarkable heritage and a bright future. Our focus will be on ensuring that we are a living, visible partner to communities across Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St. Helens and Wirral, on behalf of The King.”
The Merseyside Lieutenancy is here to provide practical support, including advice on nominations and applications for Honours and King’s Awards for Voluntary Service and Enterprise, supporting charitable groups with small grants, developing ideas for potential Royal visits, attending significant events and celebrations, and supporting collaboration.
