Southport’s magnificent J.R.R.Tolkien inspired exhibition has its last day this Saturday (27th September 2025) – and it’s set to go out in style.
Visitors are invited to go along and celebrate with Frodo’s Birthday Party, which takes place between 10am and 4pm.
This is a free, drop-in event, although donations are welcome.
You can also savour the last chance to have a look around the brilliant The Magic of Middle-Earth exhibition, which has been curated by Matt Fox.
There is lots to enjoy at Frodo’s Birthday Party.
Dungeons & Dragons was heavily inspired by J.R.R.Tolkien’s fantasy worlds. Harp Coffee & Games on King Street will be hosting an ‘introduction to D&D’ session throughout the day, so choose your character and begin your quest!
Stef Portersmith, a rather tall hobbit, reads excerpts from The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Immerse yourself in the magic 11am – 12.30pm.
In the Foyer there will be fantasy inspired craft stalls from local artists and makers.
Don’t forget your pocket handkerchief, Elven cloak, mithril shirt or wooden staff… The Atkinson will be awarding the best dressed at 3pm with a £50 gift voucher for The Atkinson and prizes donated by Waterstones bookshop on Chapel Street.
No admittance except on party business!
Regarded as the “father” of modern fantasy literature, Tolkien’s cultural influence has extended far beyond just other authors. Middle-earth has inspired creative minds of all types and acted as a Minecraft-like toolbox for generations of artists, musicians, film makers, environmentalists, and game designers.
The Magic Of Middle-earth exhibition at The Atkinson has been taking visitors on a journey beyond the books to explore that expansive artistic legacy.
Discover stunning paintings, incredible sculptures, even Middle-earth themed Lego sets. With family fun and kids activities this is an exciting exhibition for all ages. Whether you’re a little halfling or a wizened wizard you won’t want to miss this one!
The exhibition is curated by Matt Fox and is drawn from his personal collection of Tolkien memorabilia.
