A team of ‘’outstanding’’ NHS staff working across Merseyside and West Lancashire has received a top award.
The Urology Department won the Team of the Year category at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust’s staff awards and was praised for being “pioneers in their field’’ using innovative solutions to provide outstanding clinical care.
The department delivers care for patients at Southport, Ormskirk, Whiston and St Helens hospitals and receives exceptional feedback from patients who describe the team as ‘the NHS at its best’.
One of the leading urology services in the region, the team was the first in the North of England to introduce Aquablation Therapy service at Whiston Hospital, a revolutionary new robotic treatment for men with enlarged prostates which has been hailed as ‘life-changing’ by patients. The team at Ormskirk Hospital also recently performed their first HoLEP procedure, an operation for patients with enlarged prostates.
The award was presented to the team by Liverpool Football Club and England legend, John Barnes.
Two other amazing teams were also shortlisted for the award.
The Dermatology Department was praised for introducing new pathways and improved treatments. They are recognised as a centre of excellence, treating patients with the most complex conditions.
St Helens Community District Nursing Team were also shortlisted, recognised for having an enormous impact on all those they serve. Whether managing chronic conditions, providing end of life care, or responding to on-the-day clinical needs, 24 hours a day they ensure patients receive the care they need, when they need it most.

“To be crowned Team of the Year is an extraordinary achievement, and I’d like to congratulate everyone involved. It is thoroughly deserved.”
