NHS heroes from Southport, Ormskirk, St Helens and Whiston honoured as winners revealed at MWL Staff Awards 2025

The Urology Department won the Team of the Year category at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust’s staff awards

NHS heroes from Merseyside and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust were honoured at a glittering awards evening.

More than 1,200 guests, including staff, sponsors and well-known celebrities, attended the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool to celebrate the achievements of staff from across MWL including .

The Trust has 21 health locations locally including Southport & Formby Hospital, Ormskirk Hospital, St Helens Hospital and Whiston Hospital. They serve a population of over 600,000 people with a combined workforce of around 9,000 dedicated and skilled staff

A total of 12 awards were handed out on the evening as teams and individuals were honoured for their outstanding service to patients.

Speaking at the awards, Chief Executive Rob Cooper, said: 

“Tonight is all about recognising the incredible dedication, skill, and compassion that each of you brings to your role every day.

“I would like to say the biggest thank you for your continued commitment to providing the highest standards of patient care. No matter what challenges come our way, you are never taken for granted. I am very proud of you all.’’

Sponsored by local and national businesses, and at no cost to the NHS, the annual awards are a chance to recognise the enormous difference our NHS heroes have made to the lives of their many patients and the local community over the last year, and the hard work and commitment they continue to show each and every day.

The evening began with the announcement of three special awards.

The first went to staff at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals for their response to the Southport tragedy in July 2024.

Richard Fraser, former Trust Chairman received an Outstanding Contribution Award and Ann Marr OBE, former Chief Executive received a Lifetime Achievement Award for their tireless service to the Trust and the NHS.

Winner – Dementia and Delirium Team, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals

Finalist – Theatres Materials Management Team, MWL 

Excellence in Support Services

Winner – Estates and Facilities Department

Finalist – Cold Decontamination Team, Whiston and St Helens Hospitals 

Finalist – Operational Site Managers, MWL 

Patient Experience Award

Winner – Prosthetics and Laser Suite Team, Whiston and St Helens hospitals

Finalist – Endoscopy Services, Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals 

Finalist – Marshalls Cross Medical Centre 

Employee of the Year

Winner – Debbie Warburton, Ward Manager, Whiston Hospital
