Organisations in Sefton and across Merseyside are being urged to take a stand against domestic abuse by joining a pioneering workplace scheme designed to support staff who may be experiencing abuse.

Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Emily Spurrell, will host a special event this week (Friday 20th June) to showcase the Merseyside Domestic Abuse Workplace Champion Scheme – a powerful initiative that equips organisations with the tools, training and resources to create safe, supportive environments for their employees.

The Commissioner will be joined by Mayor of Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, and other key partners to highlight the importance of workplace support in breaking the cycle of abuse. The event will bring together employers from across the region to hear how they can join the scheme and will feature a range of speakers, including business leaders who have already implemented the initiative within their organisations.

The Domestic Abuse Workplace Scheme enables employers to have designated members of staff who volunteer to become ‘Workplace Champions’ helping to spot the signs of abuse, offer appropriate support and ensure staff are signposted to specialist services when needed.

With one in four women and one in seven men likely to experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, the workplace can often be the only safe space for those affected.

First launched in 2019 by the Commissioner and the Mayor, the scheme has already made a significant impact with thousands of employees across the region now having access to a trained Workplace Champion.

Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner, Emily Spurrell said: “Domestic abuse is a devastating crime that affects far too many people – often in silence. For many, the workplace may be the only safe space they have from abuse and violence, and it’s important that employers recognise and understand the hugely important role they can have in helping someone who may be suffering.

“By having a safe space within work, safe domestic abuse policies and properly trained ‘Champions’ who are able to listen and provide the right support and guidance to a vulnerable individual, that employer is in a unique position to potentially help a victim to take those all-important first steps in disclosing abuse and begin rebuilding their lives.

“This event is an opportunity for businesses to hear first-hand how they can make a difference. Whether you’re a small business or a large organisation, I encourage employers who are committed to staff welfare and well-being to register and attend this event.

“The scheme is already making a difference across Merseyside, and we want even more employers to be part of this vital movement. Together, we can build a safer, stronger Merseyside – one workplace at a time.”

Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, said: “No one should have to live in fear in their own home, but we know that sadly isn’t the case for some living in our community. That’s why it’s vital that we do everything in our power to provide the support services for victims to take those first brave steps towards safety and freedom.

“Often, the workplace is a lifeline for victims – it offers a safe space for them to open up and share their story. I’d urge every employer in our region to play their part and get involved in this scheme, helping victims to come forward with the confidence they will be listened to and protected.”

Employers of all sizes and sectors are encouraged to attend the event and find out how they can get involved. Those who sign up will receive access to training, resources, and ongoing support to implement the scheme within their workplace.
