The Concessionaires of Southport Pier say they are “elated” to hear about the Government announcing its support to fund the restoration of Southport Pier.

The historic attraction, which was first opened in 1860, has been closed since December 2022.

But in her Spending Review on Wednesday, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced that the Government will  establish a Growth Mission Fund to “expedite local projects that are important for growth but have been forgotten”, such as Southport Pier, Kirkcaldy’s seafront and High Street, and a new sports quarter in Peterborough.

Southport Pier Concessionaires The Jamieson Family said: “As a family, the Jamiesons have endured a harrowing nightmare for over two years. Our business of more than two decades was shut down with very little notice, leaving our entire workforce without jobs in an instant.

“We are absolutely elated to hear the positive news and that there is some light at the end of what has been a very bleak tunnel.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the public of Southport and surrounding areas for really rallying behind us in recent months. Your support has shown just how important the pier is for the town, for the mental and physical health of so many, and for British heritage.

“Additionally, we are deeply grateful for all the help from local MPs over the last two years, particularly Patrick Hurley MP, for pushing the coastal growth fund and highlighting our plight in Parliament.

“Here’s hoping for a concrete plan moving forward and a speedy reopening!”

A poll on Stand Up For Southport in January showed that 97% of local residents wanted the Pier to reopen, from over 1,700 respondents.

It was followed by a packed public meeting at Silcock’s Pier Family Restaurant where a packed room of local people and businesses showed their support for the Pier’s restoration.
