Southport Football Club can confirm that David Cunningham and Kieran Malone have officially completed their takeover of the club, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its proud history.
The process, which was temporarily delayed due to concerns raised by the Charity Commission, has now been resolved, allowing the new ownership to formally begin their stewardship of the club. The National League has informed the club that it is minded to ratify the takeover once certain conditions are met, and Southport FC says it is confident these will be worked through quickly and efficiently.
David Cunningham and Kieran Malone bring with them a deep respect for the heritage of Southport FC and a passionate belief in its potential. However, they have been candid about the scale of the challenge ahead, with the club currently facing significant financial difficulties and a need for substantial rebuilding both on and off the pitch.
“This is a club with a proud past and, we believe, a promising future,” said co-owner David Cunningham. “But there’s no denying the scale of the task. The finances are under immense strain, and we are effectively rebuilding from the ground up. We need the people of Southport to stand with us.”
During the transition period, the new owners have already begun laying the foundations for change, including the appointment of a new First Team Manager — a move they describe as a “key step” in shaping the team’s future identity.
“Our ethos is simple,” said Kieran Malone. “Fans are the lifeblood of this club. They should be treated as essential customers and as part of our extended family. We want to restore pride in Southport FC — not just through results on the pitch, but through a connection with the community, transparency in how we operate, and creating an environment everyone feels proud to be part of.”
Cunningham and Malone are now calling on the local community to rally behind the club.
“We need Southport behind us,” Cunningham continued. “Every ticket, every chant, every show of support matters. With the community’s help, we can turn this club around — together.”
Further updates, including squad developments and supporter engagement plans, will be announced in the coming weeks.
Season ticket information will be released in the coming days.
