Everyone is invited to gather and join Southport’s Great Big Green Lunch this summer!

This exciting new event, organised by The Hearth CIC, will take place at Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street in Southport town centre 11am-4pm on Sunday 8th June 2025. It is free to attend.

It will be a sustainable community lunch aiming to be as plastic free as possible, with visitors invited to bring their own plates, cutlery and cups.

Money raised will go towards the Elsie’s Story and Bebe’s Hive charities.

Southport’s Great Big Green Lunch has been supported by Sefton CVS and Making Energy Greener.

Food and meals are being kindly donated by local restaurants and caterers with any local business keen to donate invited to contact the organisers.

There will be a baking competition on the day, with five categories. People are welcome to bring your home baked cakes, biscuits, or either baked goods, which will then be judged.

Everything brought will then be offered to guests at the lunch.

There will be a drop-in sewing session this Saturday (31st May 2025) from 11am-3pm in Wayfarers Arcade for any volunteers interested.

People will be sewing and creating decorations for Southport’s Great Big Green Lunch from donated old clothes and scrap fabric.

It will be supported by Jen Rogers from Knot Me Macrame who will be guiding everyone.

The Hearth is a non-profit Community Interest Company based in Sefton that aims to put the heart in home.

The Hearth directors Rebecca Armstrong and Nadia Speers-Robinson said:

“We are incredibly grateful to Sefton CVS and Making Energy Greener for their generous funding, which enables us to deliver Southport’s Great Big Green Lunch!

“Please come and join us as we bring together the wonderful community of Southport to celebrate all the good in our town.

“This event is not just about coming together, but also about raising money for two amazing causes: Bebe’s Hive and Elsie’s Story. We will have donation buckets in the arcade.

“Let’s make this event a memorable one while staying committed to sustainability. Together, we can make a difference!

“If anyone would like to volunteer and come and help us, we’d love to hear from you.

“We are making Southport’s Great Big Green Lunch as sustainable as possible through the incorporation of short-dated foods and it being a plastic free event, attendees will be encouraged to bring their own dishes / cups  /cutlery and we will be providing alternatives to those who don’t.

“We would like to reach out to local restaurants and food providers to see if they would be interested in donating anything towards the meal.

“There will be a baking competition, with categories: Under 10; Under 16; Best Cake; Best Dessert; Best Biscuit; and also the Best in Show.

“We will be serving everyone’s cakes for everyone at the lunch to enjoy.

“We have reached out to the Ukrainian, Polish and other communities in Southport – we want this lunch to be open to the whole town.

“We want the day to be as plastic free as possible, with minimal waste. If someone brings a punnet of strawberries for example, we hope to be able to use the packaging for a future children’s urban gardening project.

“We support Sefton Council’s new Zero Waste policy, which is all about encouraging people to live more sustainably, make better choices, reduce food waste, and move to a more circular economy.”

The Hearth is a new community organisation that hosted its first big event, Earth Day, at Wayfarers Arcade in April.

This free, family-friendly event celebrated sustainability and empowered attendees with practical ways to save money on energy bills while making a positive impact on the planet.

Plans are already underway to make next year’s Earth Day event even bigger and better.
