Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust has been honoured in today’s 2020 Nursing Times Awards for its incredible work in helping the families of patients during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Trust won the Emergency and Critical Care Award after producing an innovative virtual video tour to alleviate relatives’ fear of the unknown during restrictions of visiting through the past few months.
Mel Pinnington and her colleague Kerry Critchley who both work in ICU, came up with the idea of making the video which shows an empty intensive care unit space.
Mel said: “We spend a lot of our time speaking to families to provide reassurance about the care their relatives are receiving. Their first priority is to know how patients are doing, but because people are unable to visit, they often want to know where their loved-one is, who is with them and what their surroundings are.
“Unfortunately, patients in ICU in a critical condition, which makes this an extremely difficult time for families who are unable to be there.”
Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust and other winners of this year’s Nursing Times Awards were revealed during a virtual ceremony held this evening (Wednesday).
The Nursing Times revealed the winners of 23 categories, including Rising Star, Nurse Leader of the Year, Team of the Year and many more to celebrate different specialties and settings.
Unique for 2020, they renamed their nurse of the year category as the Florence Nightingale Nurse of the Year, in order to mark 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale.
The big winner was Company Spectrum Community Health, with nurses from the Wakefield-based community interest company scooping two of the day’s most high-profile awards.
Lyndsey Bibby won the Rising Star category, while Helen Bishton was named Florence Nightingale Nurse of the Year.
This year, which also happens to be the 30th anniversary of the Nursing Times Awards, the CNOs chose Dr Peter Carter as their winner of the lifetime achievement award, which is sponsored by the Royal College of Nursing.

A mental health nurse by background, he is probably best known for his nine year tenure as the RCN’s chief executive and general secretary, between 2007 and 2015.
The event, which was hosted by BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty, also included recorded messages by the UK’s four CNOS and from Annette Kennedy, president of the International Council of Nurses.
His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, also thanked the profession for its work in a video marking his ongoing partnership with Nursing Times on the Integrated Approaches to Care category.
This year, the award was won by Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for its health independent sexual violence advisor service.

“Over the past 12 months, we have seen the incredible work of nursing staff highlighted globally, first by the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife that marks 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale, and then, by the massive challenge posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
“Covid-19 has tested the profession probably like no other crisis, with nurses demonstrating their expertise, skill and innovation, whatever their specialty or setting.
“So, this year more than ever, congratulations to our winners at the 2020 Nursing Times Awards!”
