Former Liverpool FC and Leeds United star Dominic Matteo is backing a new campaign by The Brain Tumour Charity.

The Southport-born footballer, who studied at Christ The King High School in Birkdale before starting his football career at Anfield, revealed in April this year how he has now fully recovered after treatment for a brain tumour.

Now he is supporting The Brain Tumour Charity as it launches its first range of t-shirts, in partnership with ethical and sustainable clothing brand Teemill, to champion and support the ‘Great Minds’ of the people within our unique community.

Dominic said: “In a world where brain tumours have such a negative impact on people’s lives, this new t-shirt range gives us the chance to celebrate that we’re actually doing amazingly for all that we’re overcoming.

“Despite a few bumps along the road, our minds are great.”

The former Scotland international underwent surgery for his tumour in November before receiving the all-clear in April.

He said at the time: “Yesterday I got THE phone call, the one I’ve been praying for… my brain scan is clear.

“After six months of fear, pain, rehab, surgery and treatment. I’m healthy! It feels unreal! The Leeds General Infirmary & St James Hospital saved my life. They were simply incredible. Thank you will never be enough!”

Domin Matteo played 155 times for Liverpool between 1993 and 2000 before joining Leeds United. He helped Leeds reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2001 and later captained the club. The defender also had spells with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City before retiring as a player in 2009.

The Brain Tumour Charity’s collection of new t-shirts is now available to purchase with 50% of the profits of each sale being donated to The Brain Tumour Charity.

The money raised from every item sold will help fund the charity’s pivotal work to support people affected by a brain tumour and also find a cure for the number one cancer killer of children and adults under 40.

The charity said: “The Great Minds theme was chosen and is supported by The Charity’s incredible Young Ambassadors. Our Young Ambassadors are an inspiring collective of empowered young people who have been affected in some way by a brain tumour. Many of them have either been diagnosed themselves or witnessed the brutal impact this disease has had on a family member or friend.

“The clothing range will help them to showcase their own strength, demonstrate their commitment to the cause and to commemorate the experiences which have brought them to where they are today.”

The charity also hopes it will help to dispel the associated negative emotions people with a brain tumour often hold about their mental capabilities including memory difficulties, personality changes and physical pain.

Great Minds also celebrates the formidable minds within the brain tumour community who are striving for change including those affected by the disease, charity supporters, clinicians and scientists working hard to find a cure.

Sarah Lindsell, chief executive of The Brain Tumour Charity, said: “We’re very excited to be launching The Charity’s first ever clothing collection. The theme is absolutely perfect for encapsulating all that we’re about – championing, supporting and celebrating people who have been affected by a brain tumour.”
