Southport Music Academy Principal Claire Kelly

Southport Piano & Music Academy is encouraging young people to enjoy learning music with them after missing out on so much during the last few months of the Covid-19 pandemic and the series of lockdowns.

The Academy features a number of local music teachers, and has raised £10,000 for local charities in recent years thanks to its regular concerts and fundraising.

It is led by founder Claire Kelly.

She said: “We are a team of 15 music teachers in the area and we now offer lots of other instruments – we are currently teaching around 300 families but have added to our services since before the pandemic – we now have drums, singing , guitar , bass, flute , clarinet, keyboard, violin, viola, euphonium as well as our established piano lesons of course  — we just want the community to know!  We also have availability for September in all of these things – lots of our lessons are mobile to your own home also which is very convenient for people! We are trying to make a name for the arts in Southport and develop young musicians and performers in the area.

“We are gradually morphing into Southport Music Academy – to achieve this.  The pandemic affected the arts a lot so now we want to encourage young people to play music and perform – by performing we raise money for charity and have raised £10,000 since 2013 from our concerts and fundraising.

“Music is also excellent for mental health, providing a creative outlet and we believe learning music should be fun.

“Music in many schools has seen a decline in recent years so we also want to fill that gap and be part of the solution of bringing music back on the agenda.

“We also help with GCSE music and performance modules. Pupils can also gain UCAS points also through our ABRSM exams.

“We have recently taken on some highly qualified musicians and teachers onto our team too.”
